Why Last Minute Cruise Deals Stink

Pee yew.

As a travel agent I am familiar with receiving those ‘last minute’ calls.

Someone wants to take a cruise within the next few weeks, many times that weekend. I usually cringe as I start the research process. I just know these poor people are going to pay a lot more for this cruise last minute than if they had booked earlier.

It basically boils down to supply and demand.

Contrary to popular belief, ships are sailing full. It is very exciting for cruise passengers, as they are able to vacation again, as well as the cruise industry. But, as the cruise ship inches closer to full capacity, the cruise price goes up.

So, when only a week or two from the departure date there are only a handful of cabins left. Thus, increasing the pricing sometimes by 200 to 300 percent.

A common thought is the cruise line will just want to fill the cabin no matter what, and you will get a great, low cruise deal. This is just unfortunately not how it works.

Someone is going to come along and purchase that last cabin, no matter the cost, and the cruise line know it.

TIP: Please DO NOT attempt to reserve a stateroom that will accomodate 3-5 passengers at the last minute. They will not be available.

On a cruise ship there are only a particular number of staterooms that will hold more than two passengers, and these do not stick around long.  Due to Coast Guard regulations and the ship’s fire code, the cruise line is not able to reserve a stateroom for 3 passengers if it is listed as a double occupancy cabin. Even if you have a 6 month old infant, you cannot reserve a cabin for two unless there are only two passengers. They would be served hefty fines if discovered, so believe me, they will not take that chance.

In reality, if you wait until the last minute you are going to pay more for your cruise than if you reserved it earlier.

My best advice for a good deal is to plan ahead. You have a wide selection of stateroom types and locations, the cruise rate is most times much lower, and if not your cruise guide, in most cases, is able to lower the price of your cruise with the cruise line before your final payment. If the price goes up you are already locked in at the lower rate. It is a win-win!

However, if you need to book close-end, I would recommend making your reservation at least 6 weeks prior to sailing. This is usually the time frame in which the cruise line will offer a promotion to lower the rate and fill up the ship, if necessary.  If you are booking within 6 weeks of departure, expect to pay more.

3 Reasons Your Life Will Stink If You Never Take A Cruise

Here are my top 3 reasons I think you are missing out if you never experience a cruise vacation.

  1. New Faces. On every cruise I’ve taken I’ve met truly interesting, good people who are so joyous and excited to be on vacation. People seem to transform once they step foot onboard. I can’t tell you how many clients I have that tell me the story of meeting life-long friends onboard a cruise, friends they still visit each year. Why miss out on an opportunity to enjoy the company of new amigos, and the opportunity to save money by splitting a cab!
  2. New Places. A cruise ship is the only vacation where you unpack once and visit several different countries. You sleep in the same bed every night, however, on a typical 7 night cruise you wake up refreshed to a new port. In one week you are visiting three to six different ports of call, amazing!
  3. Unbeatable Value. No matter your economical status, you want to get as much for your money as possible. A cruise is the best vacation value, period. Take summer vacations, for example, renting a house on the beach for a week can be TWICE the cost of a week-long cruise for your family. And on a cruise, not only are your accommodations onboard included, but your food is included, nightly entertainment, children’s programs, pools, and much more. And you don’t have to clean your room or do the dishes! Most of the ships at sea today are a destination on their own, so to take a floating resort to some of the world’s most beautiful and interesting destinations, who can refuse?

A cruise is a definitely a must-try-will-love-and-get-hooked vacation. It doesn’t hurt that all your friends and work buddies will be extremely jealous when you show them all of your vacation photos.

Relax, Your Peace of Mind is On the House—FREE Travel Insurance Offer with Your Cruise Vacation from CruiseNow.com!

Travel Insurance used to be seen as a gimmick, a negative, silly, frivolous.

Not anymore.

Whether it’s your trip, your possessions, your luggage, or your health, travel insurance has become one of the most important pieces of the cruise reservation.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, some 70 percent of cruisers buy travel insurance. The top three reasons are: peace of mind, protection against the unexpected and concern over losing the financial investment in a trip.

With everything that could go wrong on the way to the cruise terminal or during the cruise itself, going without travel insurance was taking a huge chance.

And now you don’t have to ask the question anymore, “To buy travel insurance or NOT to buy?”

Starting immediately every cruise reservation made through CruiseNow.com that is 5 nights or longer will receive FREE cruise travel insurance to protect your vacation investment. That’s right, we pay your premium!

Travel Insurance can sometimes add hundreds onto the total cost of your vacation–for example, a cruise vacation costing $2500 for a 60 year old passenger would cost that customer an additional $162 in insurance premium.

CruiseNow.com now pays the full premium for the following plan, which offers a pre-existing condition waiver available through final payment.
